Wataynikaneyap Power

Wataynikaneyap Power is one of the largest First Nations-led infrastructure projects in Canada. KBM has been working with Wataynikaneyap Power since 2017 acquiring high density LiDAR and Aerial Photography and providing GIS analysis and mapping support for their diverse project needs throughout both the construction and operations phase of the project.

GIS Support and Administration

KBM has provided GIS Support to Wataynikaneyap Power throughout the construction phase of the project to present. During construction, KBM assisted with managing spatial datasets collected from various sources including engineers, contractors, government organizations and third-party stakeholders. We provided many different mapping products to assist with the design of the transmission line, the permitting requirements and tracking construction of the line over multiple years. With construction of the line completed, KBM continues to manage their spatial datasets and administers their ArcGIS Online environment to provide a centralized online hub site for them to access their data and web mapping applications and tools in an easy-to-use interface.

Vegetation Analysis with LiDAR and Orthoimagery

KBM collects LiDAR and high-resolution orthoimagery for Wataynikaneyap Power to assist with their asset mapping and vegetation analysis. We identify vegetation infractions growing too close to conductor wires and provide vegetation modelling polygons classified by height and distance to wire to assist with vegetation management along the utility corridor. We also provide customized summary reports and an online web application for viewing data.

Wildfire Hazard Mapping and Mitigation Tools

KBM worked closely with Wataynikaneyap Power to develop a customized Wildfire Hazard Mapping solution to assist with monitoring their assets. The tool provides daily automated reporting of wildfires within proximity of assets, automated emergency reporting of new wildfires, and an ArcGIS Online Web Map application that visualizes fire risk rankings, fire origin point and perimeter information and hotspots.

The Wildfire Mitigation Tool was also developed as a resource for contractors to use before undertaking field work in order to minimize wildfire risk. The tool generates mitigation requirements for planned industrial operations based on MNRF operational standards derived from the scope of work planned, the fuel inventory of the worksite and the Fire Weather Index at the time of work.
